Self Inventory

In 1976 I was eleven years old.  I asked Christ into my life around that time.  It has been almost 34 years.  What a wonderful journey.

I have always loved music.  I began drumming when I was fourteen, sometime in 1979.  One of the first artists I remember I really enjoyed was Keith Green (October 21, 1953 – July 28, 1982).

I remember drumming to his LP.  Yes, I said LP and not CD.  CD's were not even invented in 1979, crazy huh?

The LP I remember most was titled No Compromise.  Mr. Green does not know but his album became a key part of my spiritual foundation.  I remember sitting in my bedroom listening, and re-listening to the songs.  I felt like Mr. Green was talking directly to me.  It was really the Holy Spirit.

The No Compromise album is more of a message to the Believer than the non-believer.  Mr. Green's lyrics called you to the carpet, much like the Book of James.

Ironically (well more like Gods plan) the Book of James and No Compromise  challenged me as a very young Christian.  The Holy Spirit used the words from both sources to begin to lay the foundation of my spiritual life.  To this day the words from these sources are etched deep in my soul.

Keith Green was given a message from the Lord many years ago.  The lyrics Mr. Green wrote are based on the Word of God.  The lyrics are strong, challenging, and force a person to take an inventory of ones self.

The following lyrics are for the song titled - Asleep In The Light.  As a young man this song spoke very strongly to me.  It sparked the fire within to encouraging  to share Gods Word.  Today, some 34 years later, it reminds me of what I am called to do...Share Gods Word.

Do you see?
Do you see?
All the people sinking down?
Don't you care?
Don't you care?
Are you gonna let them drown?

How can you be so numb?!
Not to care if they come
You close your eyes,
and pretend the job is done

"Oh, bless me, Lord!
Bless me, Lord!"
You know, it's all I ever hear!
No one aches,
no one hurts,
no one even sheds one tear
But, He cries,
He weeps,
He bleeds,
and He cares for your needs
And you just lay back,
and keep soaking it in

Oh, can't you see such sin?!
'Cause He brings people to your door,
and you turn them away
as you smile and say:
"God bless you!
Be at peace!"
And all Heaven just weep,
'cause Jesus came to your door,
you left Him out on the streets

Open up! Open up!
And give yourself away
You see the need,
you hear the cries,
so how can you delay?!
God is calling,
and you are the one
But like Jonah, you run
He told you to speak,
but you keep holding it in

Oh, can't you see such sin?!
The world is sleeping in the dark,
that the church just can't fight,
'cause it's asleep in the light!
How can you be so dead?!
When you've been so well famed
Jesus rose from the grave,
And you!
You can't even get out of bed!
Oh, Jesus rose from the dead!
Come on, get out of your bed!

How can you be so numb?!
Not to care if they come
You close your eyes,
And pretend the job is done!
You close your eyes,
and pretend the job is done!
Don't close your eyes,
don't pretend the job is done

Come away! Come away!
Come away with Me, mMy love!
Come away from this mess,
Come away with Me, My love!
Come away from this mess!
Come away with Me, My love!
Come away,
Come away with Me My love!

Scott,
I know God is pleased you have the boldness of Christ to reach out and share with others how He can change lives. We live in a culture of "religious tolerance" and "political correctness" which makes it so much easier for us to be silent, and not risk upseting anyone or risk appearing "pushy".

But, if we care about people, if we have the love of Christ, we will want them to know the truth. Jesus is the truth, the way, and the light, and no one comes to the Father but through Him. No matter what pain, suffering, loss, or general lack of feeling unfulfilled a person may be experiencing, Jesus can make the difference! He is knocking on the door to your heart and longs to be accepted, so He can bring full and abundant life. He wants us to have joy in fellowship with Him. We can all be children of the King!

You'll want to hear this song, Scott, if you are not familar with it. You can hear it at YouTube. "Until the Whole World Hears" by Casting Crowns? Cool video, too.

Also, this interview with the group leader on this song.
